Weekly: Get Stupified! by EduartBoudewijn Weekly: Get Stupified! by EduartBoudewijn
Here's this week's weekly picture. I felt like another animal TF was in order and I have been thinking about doing something with Hermione again, since I haven't drawn her in two years O.o

I came up with this little drawing. I was quite pleased how it turned out. I've been feeling a bit insecure about my recent drawings, but this one returned a lot of confidence, which is very nice.

I was always a bit annoyed that the Harry Potter series (especially the movies) contained so little original spell usage. You'd think that in a school filled with teenagers who all are taught 'transfiguration' classes there'd be things like this happening all the time. Especially since none of the students seem al that reserved about hexing their fellow students.

Anyway, the idea behind this drawing is that Hermione once again was being a smartass in class. Draco Malfoy had enough of her so he decided to use a new spell on her, turning her into a donkey. I quite liked this idea since Hermione is obviously so characterised by her intelligence a donkey is a nice ironic fit for her.

Also, a very small Disturbed reference in the title, because I had no idea what to call this piece.

I really think this piece is amazing as a benchmark in your progress as an artist so far, showing just how far you've come! Anatomically the proportions are spot on, which is certainly no mean feat when a transformation is involved, as that's by its nature unrealistic! Her facial expression does a good job of capturing the painful nature of the situation, striking a good balance between encroaching equine features while human characteristics are still strong enough to evoke empathy!

You've also done a great job with the colouring and shading on this piece and of course i approve of the subject matter! Well done :)

Oh my goodness! Poor Hermione! Darn you, Draco Malfoy! >:C I like how the floor looks like vines engraved on the floor but it does seem out of place, though. :/

Here is a list of things that you can improve on:

- About the floor being out of place, the floor looks like it made out of metal or some shiny rare metal. But doesn't Hogwarts is made out of stone and marble? :/ Though it does look nice but that's something Muggles would use.

- This is just a little something that annoys me. What about "Yee-Haw!" instead of "Hee-haw!" I think that would be more of a donkey sound. :/

- I think that the transformation is kinda disturbing with hands and the head. Maybe don't have them distorted in a weird way. :/

Overall, I like how the magic seeping into Hermione is like a snake and it cast from Malfoy who is Slytherin that has the symbol of a snake. Oh my god, I did I just notice something that no else noticed! OoO Anyways, your other strongest points are the shading and clothing folds. I hope this helps!

Since the books were written for children and later young adults, I think JK Rowling toned back some of the consequences to magic.  The movies more so, plus the producers wanted the movies to be appealing to people who haven't read the books.  Filling up the dialogue with magic spells would turn off someone who is not familiar with the world, and it would waste screen time explaining everything.  Transfiguration has it's limitations and I think I get the angle you are taking with this, as a spell that went wrong.  Rowling does talk about other things like getting "spliced" where  you use flue powder wrong, and get messed up at the arrival point.  She does tend to downplay though the effects of getting magic wrong, other then the spell is void and null so nothing happens.

Lev Grossman tends to go into more depth with the skill both natural and learned required to use magic.  He also tackles the dangers of using magic without safety or boundaries, and opening up portals for demi-gods etc to manifest as well as other crazy stuff.

Regarding the pic, yeah it's nice to see Draco actually use magic.  The problem is, Draco was never that clever. He used his position as a spoilt rich kid who was the child of a pedigree of pure blood wizards and witches to bully his way around.  Rowling establishes this from the first book, and he never really changes until the very end of the series.  That's possibly why Hermine would never get into a position like this, and why Draco couldn't defend himself from being turned into a ferret by Mad Eye Moony.

Fair enough, but I still feel like most of the barriers were pretty arbitrary. The books (for what I remember, have to admit it has been years since I read the books) had quite a few instances where kids would cast hexes or something like that on one another mostly for fun. And since there was that whole starting transfiguration class with turning rats into cups, I really wouldn't say that turning a human into a different animal would've been all that complicated in comparison. All mostly my own interpretation of course, and I probably have some obvious biases on that point ^^; Also, from my perspective, I always saw it as Draco being totally surprised by Moony using a transfiguration spell on him, which is mostly why he didn't react in any way to it, which was what I was going for with this pic as well. Hermione tries to react with her Expelliarmus spell, but is already too late as her braying suggests. And I get that Draco was never as magically talented as some of the other kids, but still he passed all of his classes so at least he was doing something right.

Well, I'd think that there'd be enough proper wizards at the school to have her turned back eventually. Though of course you're free to imagine that something went wrong and the spell is 'locked' on some way, leaving her as a donkey without being able to turn back.

There are lots of options available when you're transforming someone you don't like. Too bad you usually can only pick one.

Even then there are so many options. You can go fly or pretty much any other kind of insect. Maybe even go classical with frog or toad.

Ah! This is fantastic! The nose/muzzle transition is super smooth, really conveys the act of transforming very well!

Thank you, mars! Finding a proper midpoint is something I've often struggled with and admired in other TF artists. I think that with this piece I've made some good steps toward that point. And I'm very glad that you like it of course ^^

As you probably know, my favorite part of the tf is the moment its fully completed but midway tfs can really strike the right chord with me!

yeah for a universe of magic most of the spells were quite simple, but nice to see hermione transformed

well the sad part is that with polyjuice potion and the animages we know transformations are quite possible, sadly we dont see any of it used more prominently, and yeah great work on the pic :]

I get that it's likely difficult to bring across in movies or anything. But to me in the HP movies it really just sucks all of the magic out when they just use their wands as magical guns. Even when Voldemort and Dumbledore are dueling they are just throwing some fire and light around.. where's the creativity?
